Uncle Tim's Symetrical Scales
This
is the standard progression of diminished scales. While diminished scales
are not mainstream, they have some amazing characteristics.
A diminished scale is called a symmetrical scale. Can you see why? It is totally symmetrical. It is always two notes separated by a half step gap and then the cycle repeats again. With this scale, you can easily construct a diminished chord (C, D#, F#) or a minor chord (C, D#, G). The chord comes right out of the scale.
Once you understand and use these types of concepts, these scales take on new meaning. If you want to explore minor sounds with diminished chords, this scale is a real jewel. Diminished sounds show up all the time in music and they are quite emotional. But you need to be able to understand them to use them. Otherwise they are just something out there that you cannot use.
A symmetrical scale can be memorized for all twelve keys in a matter of minutes. The symmetrical nature of this scale, makes it easy to apply this to any key quickly. You can only learn this if you look at how it is mapped for each key. Then it's easy. The diminished example is just one. You may not be interested in diminished scales, but this will affect scales you are interested in. Because they are all related.
